I wrote Salam, with my producer Doug, in response to the increasing turmoil surrounding us. The first line, "Salam" is the Arabic word for peace! As corny as some may think that is, this is the way many people greet each other in the Middle East. I grew up greeting everyone with a handshake, a kiss and "salam!" The song (and the word) instantly resonated with me on so many levels that I was urged to release it as a universal anthem in our troubled times. The first phrase begins, "unforgotten faces of our world". This refers to the images of war, and loss and suffering that are burned in my mind. Some say this message is trite, maybe so, but I sense that we are so overwhelmed and numb by what we see that a message of peace suddenly seems incredibly unattainable. For those out there who have lost that sense of feeling, I hope this song will dance that message back on your heart. We can't lose touch with what is simple and calm. Salam is not my song, it is OUR song. Sing it with urgency, with spirit and with prayer that we find our way back to peace!
