Product notities

About the Album: This album is about love, lovers and relationships. The lyrics are poetic and very personal, like reading the pages out of Matthew's diary. The band brings the songs to life with trumpet, guitars, bass, drums, accordion, keys, congas and other percussion. The sounds are rich and vibrant with a romantic flair. This album is a labor of love involving many talented musicians. It has been an absolute joy to create! We've poured our hearts into the making of it and we're proud to present the debut album by Matthew Inkala & the Hostages, 'One Footed Pigeon,' to you now. The 15-song CD includes a full-color booklet with many vibrant pictures and all of the album's song lyrics. About the Recording: We started recording back in June of 2009 at Flowers Studio in Uptown Minneapolis with the multi-talented engineer Peter Anderson at the controls. The first two days we tracked drums, guitar & vocals for 2/3rd's of the album. Drummer Jeff Bowback and I recorded the drums, acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time to give the album more of a live feel. Next, Eric Malagon added his rich lead guitar phrasings to the tracks and Rob Kaszubowski began painting the musical canvas gold with his trumpet. In July of 2009 drummer Brian McLeod who drums for Mason Jennings, Atmosphere & Attracted To Gods came into the studio and added drums to 3 of the songs- Little Baby Lemon Bun, Maria & Black Leather Black Hole. I recorded Little Baby Lemon Bun and Maria in my home studio and had Brian McLeod add drums to those tracks at Flowers. We recorded Black Leather Black Hole together in 1 take. Brian had never heard the song before and we were just going to run through it once for practice and then try recording it. We recorded the practice take and it sounded so good to me that we kept that version and even left in the false start at the beginning. I really like the raw feeling of it and Brian really knows his way around a drum set. Next Christian Rodriguez came into the studio and began adding keyboards, accordion, congas and other percussion to the tracks. His accordion work on She Likes To Run and the keys and synth that he added to The Seafarer's Dream simply blow my mind... In August Eric Malagon finished adding his lead guitar to the tracks. Rob Kaszubowksi added more trumpet and Jeff Bowback recorded the drums for Drum Mallet Antennaed Lovin' Alien. For Drum Mallet Antennaed Lovin' Alien I actually use a Rubber Mallet to play my guitar. With the technique I use, the mallet bounces off of the strings as I play resulting in a sprightly, playful sound. Next, Jay Lerma began recording bass guitar and also lead guitar for Black Leather Black Hole. I really wanted Black Leather Black Hole to be dense with sound so I had Eric Malagon and Jay Lerma each play lead guitar on this track. They battled it out very nicely, make sure you check out this track. On this day in the studio I also recorded my guitar, bass & vocals for the song 'Darling,' which is a bonus track from my ep 'this old man' which I released in September 2009. The song is only available digitally through Itunes. September 2009 found Jay Lerma and I back in the studio on two separate occasions to record his bass lines. He does great work, just check out Little Baby Lemon Bun- he captured the tongue in cheek nature of the song quite nicely. During these sessions I recorded my whistling solo for Joie de Vivre and added the mighty gong and various vocal silliness to The Walls. I also released my ep 'this old man' in September. It's a very personal album like all of my albums are. It's sad but with redemption. It's comprised of stripped down folk songs about the ending of a relationship whereas 'One Footed Pigeon' is about the beginning of a new one. I added self-recorded background tracks of rain and thunderstorms to the ep to give it the right atmosphere. I'm a big fan of using ambient noise for background tracks to give you the feeling that you're in a certain space when listening to my music. In October of 2009 I went back into the studio to record bass for Beautiful and Red, Yellow Ray, Maria, Sun Song, You Can't Worry The River and Black Leather Black Hole. Engineer and drummer Peter Anderson also added tambourine to Black Leather Black Hole. We worked on mixing as well during this session which is something that we had already been working with here and there at each of our previous sessions in the studio. This was our last recording day of 2009. Fast forward to February 2010 when vocalist Leah Nelson joined me in the studio to record backing vocals for The Seafarer's Dream and Joie de Vivre. While in the studio she decided to try singing two separate vocal parts for the breakdown in Joie de Vivre so that she was harmonizing with herself. We panned her vocal parts so that they move back and forth from speaker to speaker while I'm singing my part. The result gives me chills every time I hear it- I couldn't be happier with Leah's beautiful vocal addition to this album. Rob Kaszubowski recorded his amazing trumpet part for Yellow Ray during this day and all recording for the album was completed. Over the next few months I worked with Peter Anderson to get the songs final mixed and then I took my album over to Dave Gardner at Magneto Mastering to start the mastering process. We decided on the exact length between tracks and Dave made this already sweet sounding recording sound even better. The Story Behind the Album's Title: It's a custom of mine to spend some time alone each year on my birthday to relax and reflect on life and to write out my reflections. Some years back while I was doing this, sitting outside of a coffee shop in downtown Minneapolis in the early evening sipping my coffee and watching the pigeons peck for crumbs on the sidewalk below, I got the idea for the title of this album. I was leaning back in my chair relaxed and inspired, pen to page, but only 7 words would come- 'bright, renewed. Fuel to self I stand.' I watched a gray and black pigeon land gracefully next to me on the stone sidewalk. It regarded me for a moment and then walked steadily past. As I looked closer I noticed that the pigeon had only one foot- the other was gone entirely and in it's place a stump where I assume a foot had once been attached. This however did not seem to impair it's ability to fly. Buy the new album 'One Footed Pigeon' by Matthew Inkala & the Hostages. You won't regret it. We've poured our hearts out into this 15-song album and trust that you'll thoroughly enjoy the bounty!! :) Cheers! Matt.
