Mary Karen Clardy, Professor of Flute at the University of North Texas, appears throughout the United States, Great Britain, Europe, the Far East, and South America as a soloist, chamber artist and teacher. A frequent performer at National Flute Association conventions, she has also appeared at the British Flute Society's international conventions. Released in August, Ms. Clardy's newest CD, Sonatas and Sonatinas, features the world premiere recording of Steven Harlos's Sonata Rubata for Flute and Piano. Two volumes of transcriptions of Faure's Melodies were recently published by Alphonse Leduc in Paris, and currently at press are two new volumes (Classic Duets II and Classic Solos for Flute) from Universal Edition in Vienna. Renowned as a teacher, she regularly gives master classes at home and abroad, including London's Royal and Trinity Colleges; the Boccherini Institute in Italy; and Oberlin, Yale and Manhattan Schools. By invitation of the Ministry of Culture, she has taught in Taiwan's Summer Music Institute, and her students have been prize-winners in competitions throughout the world, including Rampal, NFA, Markneukirchen, and Flute Talk. Ms. Clardy's three books, available from European American/Warner are in multiple reprint, and her edition of Altes's Daily Exercises are available for the first time separate from his Complete Method. Scheduled appearances for the season include Shanghai's Conservatory of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, and a return visit to South America. Pianist/Composer Steven Harlos made his solo debut at Lincoln Center in 1986, performing the Gershwin Concerto in F. Known for his sensitivity as an collaborative artist, he has performed with many artists of international stature, including Timofei Dokshutzer, Harvey Phillips, Erick Friedman, and Gervase de Peyer. In the popular music field, he has worked with such diverse artists as Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Maureen McGovern and Tommy Tune. As a jazz pianist, he assisted Dick Hyman in the first performances of his ballet 'Piano Man' with the Cleveland Ballet, and subsequently performed the work with the Cleveland Ballet on numerous occasions. He also performed Mr. Hyman's ballet 'The Bum's Rush', with the American Ballet Theater at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Recent successes in the field of composition include the publication of his 'Sonata Rubata' for flute and piano by Southern Music Company, and the world premiere of his recent compositon 'benniana', a jazz sonatina for clarinet and piano, in China at the Changchun International Saxophone and Clarinet Festival. An active musician in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, he currently serves as Staff Keyboardist for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and as Coordinator of Piano and Collaborative Piano at the University of North Texas in Denton.
