It all started in 2010 as a good idea on a barstool fueled by whiskey and a love of American music. Daniel (the singer-songwriter with a penchant for classic country) and Zach (the guitar-banjo songwriter with bluegrass, mountain-stomp blood) decided to put together a monthly cover band playing the best of alternative country, folk and Americana songs at Carrboro, NC's local music staple, The Station at Southern Rail. They cherry- picked their favorite guitarists (Rich and Jason) and rhythm section (Jonathan and Mimi) to rock up their post-country, add Andrew on mandolin and rhythm. Together, they put together a set list, and Magnolia Collective began. After turning the monthly series into a highly attended success, playing covers just was not enough for the band. With three prolific songwriters in the group, they soon started playing each other's original songs. Soon, the crowd was singing and requesting the originals as often as the covers. And then the crowd wanted recordings. So 'Ghost Stories,' MagCo's debut EP, was created during the swampy North Carolina summer of 2011. These songs were recorded with love, sweat and tears in Daniel's un-air conditioned, hot-as-hell Carrboro bungalow, fondly known to the band as Bim Street Fantasy Factory. This collection of six songs is a solid introduction to what Magnolia Collective does best: narrative-driven, atmospheric music that smacks of sincere, shared experience. The instrumentation is classic, but the sound is a diverse collage of guitars, bass, banjo, mandolin, drums, vocal harmonies, pedal steel and musical saw. And the result is soulful, upbeat, sometimes spooky, and always heartfelt.
