Product notities

By CURTIS ROSS | The Tampa Tribune Published: June 2, 2011 Ska is so upbeat, so joyous a sound, it seems as if it's lyrics would have to be cheery as well. To paraphrase what Steve Martin said about the banjo, you can't sing a depressing song while playing ska. But Ed Lowery, a Tampa musician with nearly 20 years experience playing ska, might beg to differ. 'Ybor City,' the latest album by Lowery's band Magadog, gracefully addresses some dark topics over lively, danceable rhythms. 'The Great Depression' deals with depression, unemployment and a friend's suicide. 'Hey Skinhead' calls out the killer of Dave 'Dave Rat' Anderson, a Tampa musician who was stabbed to death trying to break up a fight in 2005. 'Ybor's Burning' recounts the fires that destroyed old houses in Ybor City in the mid-'90s, as the district was deteriorating from an arts-and-music center into the binge-drinking theme park it is today. 'Parking garages and nightclubs were popping up where those torched houses previously existed,' Lowery says. He calls a 2000 fire at an Ybor City condominium construction site near Interstate 4 a 'karmic twist.' Not that 'Ybor City' is a downer, or that all the songs carry such serious sentiments. But it's bound to be a little bittersweet. After all, the Ybor City of the early '90s was where Magadog began. 'Bohemian youth ruled the streets of Ybor then,' Lowery says. 'Ybor was a lot looser then and we loved it.' Magadog quickly became one of the biggest bands on Florida's thriving mid-'90s ska scene. It recorded for New York-based ska label Moon Records and even got some MTV play for it's 'Monkey in the White House' video. Magadog never got the notoriety of punk-ska crossovers such as Reel Big Fish or Goldfinger, though. 'There was a lot more commercial acceptance for those groups than for bands that played traditional ska,' Lowery says. 'People hop on bandwagons and styles get oversaturated,' Lowery says. 'It became kind of a trend and B-circuit bands like us got washed over.' Magadog never split but did go on the back-burner for a while around the turn of the century. Lowery played drums with other groups, including The Unrequited Loves, and became a father. Magadog regrouped in 2007 to record 'Sunrise,' it's fourth album. Touring isn't much of a consideration now, Lowery says, as most band members have jobs and families to consider. But Lowery hardly sounds disappointed. 'Magadog started off more or less by accident,' Lowery says. 'It was a fun band and we wanted to give it a whirl. I never had any intention of the band getting as big as it did.' The band's lineup has fluctuated over the years, with seemingly every musician on the Tampa scene playing with Magadog at least once or twice. Vocalist Lowery, bassist Dave Akright and keyboardist Jim Pedigo are the mainstays. The current lineup also features guitarist K. Paul Boyev, drummer Carlos Velez, trombonist David Russell, saxophonist Joe Terrana and trumpeter Kenny Pullin. Pedigo is recuperating from a serious illness. Paul Catala will fill in on keyboards for upcoming live dates. Tonight's CD release party for 'Ybor City' is presented by listener-supported radio station WMNF, 88.5 FM.
