Product notities

The musical arrangements, sonic changes and stories told throughout Luke Cunningham's solo debut record Heart Pressure are as diverse as they are unpredictable; yet it's the record's very inability to be defined that seems to inevitably lure you deeper into the album's track listing. It begins as the opening track For The Best starts swelling into a piano-driven tale of rural love and loss; an up-tempo tune that paradoxically conveys the low feeling of missed opportunity and roads untaken. Yet as opposed to being weighed down in the emotional mire of the song's melancholy storyline, the tune's undeniably addictive hook and chorus line instead leave the listener tapping their toes long after the song's conclusion. Other tracks such as Say Something and Faith In Me seem to come crashing into the play list with anthem-like exhilaration and stirring choruses. The songs-in the best way possible-feel like they were practically meant for radio; as something about both tracks make you feel as if they were meant to be sang along to over a pair of car speakers during rush hour traffic. The rise and fall of their arrangements and the unfolding ballads all give credence to Cunningham's affinity for pop-driven song structure as well as his ability to craft infectious melodies. It comes of little surprise to learn that both tracks have already been selected for usage in an upcoming 2011 feature film-in spite of the fact that as of this review-the record is still a month away from hitting shelves. What's perhaps most refreshing about Heart Pressure is the moment where listeners figure out that-unlike almost every other album on modern radio-Heart Pressure's appeal is that it impressively bridge's the gap between the rock, pop/rock and singer/songwriter genres by refusing to compromise the lyrical integrity and intelligence of the message. The pleasing rock/pop songs on this record are one thing, but the lyrics and words beneath them are so brilliantly poignant that one could easily draw parallels between Cunningham's songwriting methodology and those of such indie artists as Ryan Adams and Ray Lamontagne. But just when you feel like you're able to put your finger on where Heart Pressure is going, you're given songs like Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is or Songs About California. The former is a 190-proof shot of straight up rock & roll, donning dirty guitars, pounding drums and tongue-and-cheek lyrics about a sordid one night stand, while the latter is an Americana-style ballad with vintage acoustic sounds, plate reverb, upright piano and a guest vocal appearance by alt-country sweetheart Cary Ann Hearst. Sang in the type of 'call and response' country duet style reminiscent of Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris or Dolly & Kenny, Songs About California seems to tap into the roots and sounds of Cunningham's up-bringing in rural West Kentucky while at the same time delivering one of Heart Pressure's most flawlessly authentic offerings. Such variance in styles and even format might perhaps feel out of place if it weren't for Cunningham's unmistakable focus on the storyline of each song. And it's most likely no accident that the attention given to such detail could be seen as the creative crux of the album itself. Heart Pressure gives music fans a welcomed reminder that songs are supposed to be stories. And by putting the story itself in the foreground and then wrapping the music around it, Cunningham and Heart Pressure have delivered a first-class collection of songs and a record destined for big things.
