Silent Wrecks & Rolling Decks
The weather deck. Wind and spray in your face. Green water coming over the windward rail. Take a moment to gather yourself and catch your breath. Settle up on the leeward rail. Get out of the wind, turn your gaze to the open sea and listen. Listen for the curl of the waves, the hum of the engines, the cry of the gulls. Listen for those who came before, lifting their voices in song, giving comfort to themselves, their dorymates, their fellow crew members, their loved ones at home. You've found the leeward rail, and The Leeward Rail Band has found you. Welcome aboard! It all began in a book about New England commercial fishing set against the backdrop of the cold war. The story, 'The Freedom Plant, a Novel of New England Fishermen', written by author and musician Capt. Kevin McCormick, holds a rich legacy of maritime music woven throughout it's plotline. McCormick, along with accomplished musicians Keith Allen and Jim Somers, formed The Leeward Rail Band to share the book's music, and in so doing, explore the greatest of maritime folk traditions-singing about the sea. You've read "Captain's Courageous", you've heard "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", you've watched "Deadliest Catch". Admit it, you've wanted to toss your sea bag over the rail, throw off the lines, and experience nature's seaborne beauty, bounty, fortunes and fears for yourself. Stow your gear down below, grab yourself a coffee, then get back on deck. We're shoving off on a musical voyage. The Leeward Rail Band- nautical, traditional, contemporary, ethereal, but never ordinary. Rich music that will leave you with salt spray in your face. Welcome aboard 'Silent Wrecks and Rolling Decks'!
