Product notities

1, WHERE'S FATS DOMINO? - A few days after Katrina hit New Orleans there were several days when the evening news was asking 'Where's Fats Domino?' after he was photographed boarding a boat outside his flooded home in New Orleans & had seemingly disappeared. Turned out he was staying in West Houston with a friend and had somehow missed all of the brouhaha surrounding his disappearance. The almost nonsensical chorus plays into Larry's fondness for late 50s/early 60s New Orleans r 'n b Top 40 hits like 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' by Jessie Hill, & 'Ya Ya' by Lee Dorsey. 2. DANCE ALL NIGHT, SLEEP ALL DAY - In 2004 Larry drove from Houston to Beaumont almost every weekend to the Dixie Dancehall owned by Tracy Byrd in Beaumont's warehouse district.. a mini 6th Street that includes an Antone's blues club a la Austin. Larry's been a dance instructor since 1983 & dancers from his days of competing in dance would show from Lake Charles & the surrounding areas. The Dixie was a sea of cowboy hats & pickup trucks that was a throwback to the Urban Cowboy dance clubs in Houston. The country musicians & dancers in this area are like cockroaches.. The last bastion for the Texas/Louisiana hardcore! When country music/dancing dies in this area.. it's over for everyone!! 3. RIGHT NOW! - Larry was on the phone with a dance friend he had known since 1983.. an ICU hospital administrator. She said she was no longer looking for Mr. Right and was now looking for Mr. Right Now. A week later he wrote this song. 4. THAT'S WHY WE GO TO THE ZYDECO - Larry's dad is from Zwolle, Louisiana famous these days for the Zwolle Tamale Fiesta. Zwolle got electricity in 1966 and with that came TV & long hair & drugs but Zydeco/Cajun music lives on. This song started off as a cajun waltz with the triple syllable rhyme 'why-we-go to the zy-de-co'. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Dolan from Austin.Texas (by way of Bruce Robison's band) nailed the accordian part. 5. WHY PAINT MEMPHIS BLUE? - It took 4 years & continuous prodding by Nashville songwriter & song critiquer Barbara Cloyd before Larry was satisfied with the lyrics. When Larry was laying the rhythm track down with Delbert McClinton's band it wasn't going well at first. He stopped & said, 'How about we think Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, Reggie Young, & James Carr's original version of 'The Dark End Of The Street'. They got it in one take! Lloyd Maines (father of Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks) plays exquisite steel guitar & backup vocals by The Hanshaws. 6. YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS - Iusically the most complex song I've written. Originally envisioned as a Tony Joe White Louisiana swamp rocker but Delbert McClinton's band gave it a Tom Petty. 7. THAT GIRL I MET FROM LAFAYETTE - Seven & half minute spooky-sultry-Louisiana-swampy-murder-ballad-epic. Larry's personal favorite on the CD. 8. HURRICANE - Larry evacuated Houston along with 2.5 million other people preceding Hurricane Rita. He headed to steel guitar Dennis Challman's house outside Austin, Texas. Normally a 3.5 hour drive it took him & kids 28 hours!! Along the way, it was unfolded as a true to life reality show out of 'Lord Of The Flies'. The next day he wrote this song. His son, Austin, plays the clean sounding guitar accompaniment & the guitar solo.
