Close to Home
'Close to Home' is the culmination of a three-year project of great joy and exhausting detail, co-written and produced with my good friend Multi-Platinum Grammy-Winning George Merrill (Boy Meets Girl) of Whitney Houston hits 'Waiting for a Star to Fall' and 'How Do I Know' . His song with BMG 'Waiting for A Star to Fall' was a gigantic hit in the late 80's. My great friend, songwriter and poet Scott O'Brien and I also collaborated on three tunes on this album. It's fair to say that every song is perfectly understandable, highly listenable, and instrumentally astounding. 'Close to Home' was produced in three studios, including George's own studio@107 and Kevin Harris' legendary Harwood Productions, Martinez, Ca., these songs will sustain your interest through a great variety of topics, from a dog song to sea shanty; from global waming to a blistering satire on Wall Street Greed; from Grandma's quilt to a sailing getaway tune; from a quirky frontier character (Black Bart) to a funky old hardware store that burned down and was rebuilt; from a songwriting muse to an elderly relative who lost her memory all at once. Songs with heart and meaning; songs about real people and real events. The album's sequence flows flawlessly from one song to the next. The vocals are strong, welcoming. George says 'you're a great singer.' We'll see about that. The instrumentation, provided by myself on Acoustic guitar, Kevin Harris on acoustic, electric, and bass, as well as percussion and keyboards, George Merrill on keyboards and backing vocals along with Hilary Merrill, Gus Garelick on mandolin and fiddle, Charlie Moller on clarinet, the late Michael Whitwell on flugelhorn, Gary Grubb and John Morton, additional guitars, the famed Bruce Kurnow on harmonica. We're extremely proud of this album. As Chris Samson, editor of the Petaluma Argus-Courier and the Petaluma Magazine said: 'If Larry Potts songwriting had a recipe, you'd start with a base of fresh, tasty folk, add two cups of chunky, marinated Americana; spoon in a generous dolloip of alt-country; stir in a sprig of jazz, a pinch of pop and garnish with wake-up social commentary. What you'd have would be a rich assortment of songs about trains, dogs, adventure, love, heartbreak, quirky frontier characters and tributes to land and place--all delivered with honesty, originality, and humor. 'Close to Home', his third independently produced CD of original songs, delivers all of the above with 14 new compositions that range from poignant and inspirational to rousing and powerful. Potts' songs defy genre and do not esily fall into categories. Just when your'e ready to define his music as country-folk or Americana, he'll come at you with a little jazz-pop, Blues, or a powerful statement about what's happening in the world. Above all, Potts is a storyteller in the classic tradition. And his stories, set to music, are ones that need to be told and heard. A teacher and counselor, Potts began writing songs in l999 and has won and placed in numerous National and International song contests, including the John Lennon, Unisong, Great American Song Contest, West Coast Songwriter Song of the Year, Kerrville New Folk Competition and the Tucson Folk Festival. He performs regularly in the Bay Area. Working closely with Potts in the making of this CD were hit songwriter George Merrill, guitarist-producer Kevin Harris and fellow songwriter and poet Scott O'Brien. 'Close to Home' is the real deal: honest, heartfelt story-songs about real people and events, delivered with conviction, humor and compassion.'
