Kim Malmquist has studied music and conducting at the conservatory Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He has received a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Music of Sweden and the Marianne and Sigvard Bernadotte award to young artists. At the present time Kim Malmquist works as a pianist, composer, and conductor. He has appeared as chamber musician and piano soloist in Swedish National Broadcasting. Among the works performed are some of his own compositions. Kim Malmquist's works include compositions for solo instrument, chamber music ensembles, and symphony orchestra. He has also composed film music which has been performed in Swedish National Television, as well as chamber opera works. Kim Malmquist has made CD recordings where he plays his own compositions for piano solo: 'Fragile Water' (2005), 'The Magic Theater' (2008) and 'Luminessence' (2011). Pieces of the suite Fragile Water have been performed by the Department of Dance of California State University, Long Beach, USA. After the piano suite "Fragile Water", which I created with inspiration from water, the ever-changing element, I have now turned my artistic attention to light. In the present piano pieces I have endeavored to capture the innermost nature of light, the essence of light, with it's innumerable changes in shades and nuances, perceptible around us as well as inside ourselves. The work of composing of the music of this album "Luminessence" evolved into a journey greatly influenced by meditation. This has made imprints in my composition: in it's contents as well as in it's form.
