My approach to this recording was very organic. Some pieces are 100% improvised and some are improvisations around a theme, very much in a jazz style. I relied on the purity and depth of the sound of these ancient instruments recorded with a minimum of studio gadgetry and the stunning musicianship of the artists who honored me with their presence on this recording. In the zen spirit of the Shakuhachi, most performances are live first-takes with very little or no editing. The scope and spirit of these pieces encompass emotional, psychic, physical and spiritual landscapes dear to my heart....trance states, meditation, madness, mind blowing treks in the Himalayas, love in it's myriad expressions, the loneliness of the warrior on this bewildering universe, sacred ritual, a quite cup of tea on a sunny afternoon, a drive downtown with the mountains on the horizon.
