... Night People "To achieve a great recording, it has to be an honest and clear document of what the artist is trying to say...a unique story told in a compelling way..." FANTASY RECORDING STUDIO Established in 1949 in San Francisco by pressing plant owners Max and Sol Weiss, Fantasy's Recording Studio's and Record Company's first artist was an Oakland pianist named Dave Brubeck. When his recordings began to sell, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Allen Ginsberg and Lenny Bruce along with many other Media stars recorded there. The original owners later sold the Fantasy Recording Studio's and Record Company to salesman, Saul Zaentz and a group of investors in 1967. The following year brought the money-making- machine, Creedence Clearwater Revival, selling more than 100 million records worldwide. In 1971, Fantasy moved to an Industrial Park in Berkeley near San Francisco and re-opened it's recording studio. My first recording assignment for Fantasy was at the original studios on Natoma Street in San Francisco, with Max Weiss engineering in 1963. One of the most unusual aspects of the studio was the recording equipment. They'd purchased a brand new Stereo/Mono Ampex Tape Machine and two Telefunken 251 Microphones, the finest equipment of that time. These where the very microphones I wanted for the well rounded sound of Daryl Johnson's voice. SURPRISE REEL TO REEL TAPES I was at Daryl's house, and thinking that we should probably go back to Fantasy Studios and record a couple more tunes for the Night People CD, then I noticed a stack of magnetic tapes. I was looking at them, and saw that they were labeled as radio shows from the Purple Onion and Bimbo's 365 Club, San Francisco clubs from the 1960s. Back at Apophis Records in Hollywood, I played the tape from the Purple Onion and could barely hear anything. However, I worked with the frequencies and it started to disclose itself. I ran the tape onto a DAT machine because I knew the tape wasn't going to last. After I made two copies, the tape broke, and I realized the music was saved just in time. I worked with it for a long time, doing some radical EQing. The Bimbo's 365 Club tape was even more difficult. I call this process "Music Recording Archeology"... finding things that couldn't be heard previously. THE MERGING OF TRACKS I made the decision to keep all the live tracks together from the Fantasy Recording Studios except for the last song, "Ev'rytime We Say Goodbye", which followed the surprisingly second half of the Night People recording. This wonderful CD is a timeless recording of real artistry, and a most listenable piece of San Francisco's Musical History, saved just in time! Producer/Arranger Jimmy Stewart * Daryl Johnson's vocal influences are: Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, and Peggy Lee. Daryl listens to, Diana Krall, Mariah Carey along with, Celine Dion. ** Jimmy Stewart's taste in music runs the entire range of guitarist from, Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery. Too Classical Guitarist Andrea Segovia and Composers, Bella Bartok. Igor Stravinsky and Duke Ellington.
