Johnny Mercier Biography: The intellectual talent of Johnny Mercier, the musician, can be attributed to a handful of distinct yet universal influences through inspired aspirations, a sincere love of God, a deep hunger for knowledge, and his wicked sense of humor! As a pianist and organist, he's driven to leave his musical mark, the fruit that he bears, on the world's stage with an intention to reflect a sense of joy, encouragement and peace through his music. After hearing a quote from Steve Harvey he realized that having a 'Plan B' was not an option, and continues to fulfill his purpose as a forward thinking musician and businessman in demand. Like most musicians Mercier, born to a close knit Haitian family, can trace his musical prowess back to an early age. Even then he had an ear for compelling musicianship having been raised listening to Haitian gospel music and popular songs by French artists from the 60's and 70's. His initial love of music developed from infancy when his mother noticed his ability to distinguish which songs he did and did not approve of; he would silently take in songs being played on the radio, and if he wasn't fascinated by the song, he would cry until it was changed to something he could really appreciate! Because his love of good music was evident, Johnny began formal training while becoming immersed in the straight ahead masters of our time: Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. Today his musical influences range from Chaka Khan to Chopin and his ultimate goal is to establish an umbrella under which he produces various experimental styles of music. A life devoted to creating, nurturing and living music of all forms has led Johnny to a number of professional accomplishments while playing piano and Hammond organ. He has honed his own craft as a skilled musician by studying with accomplished pianists such as respected jazz recording artist Mulgrew Miller, Billboard's Best New Jazz Artist of 2000 Marc Cary, and Joel Weiskopf. Currently touring with jazz saxophonist and Grammy award-nominee Kenny Garrett, Mercer has accompanied chart-topping Soul/R&B and gospel artists throughout his career including Anthony Hamilton, Kim Burrell, Vickie Winans, Donnie McClurkin, and Paula White. He's also served as musical director for many accomplished independent and signed artists including Sunshine Anderson, whose lead single 'Heard It All Before' was certified gold. He maintains that while being a part of the total band experience is synonymous to having a conversation where powerful statements are being expressed and thoroughly engaged, his priority is in creating innovative music as a note-worthy producer, writer and arranger.
