Product notities

John Egenes now lives in New Zealand, far away from the high desert country of New Mexico that shaped his songwriting and multi-instrumental skills for so many years. And while he enjoys his adopted kiwi home, he maintains his strong ties to the threads of Americana that he continues to weave into the fabric of his music. There is an honesty and forthrightness in his work that stands out in a world full of angst-ridden singer/songwriters and strummers of open-tuned acoustic guitars. Simple and straightforward on the surface, John's lyrics are highly figurative and contain layers that might go unnoticed on first listen. He augments his metaphors with a trademark stream of understated instrumental licks and figures that never seem to clash, never get in the way of the song. His latest offering, 'The Stone Soup Sessions', brings together some of John's close pals in what he refers to as 'the 21st century folk process', the bottom-up structure that is characteristic of today's digital culture. After nearly a century of music provided by a top-down, industry driven environment, Egenes sees fundamental changes coming in the ways in which we conceive, create, produce and consume music and other intellectual content. Employing a "stone soup" method of musical contributions from a stellar cast of musicians around the world, he has fashioned a seamless piece of Americana. His songs carry us down the road in an 18-wheeler ("21 Days From Macon", "Where The Highway Takes Me") to the vast empty reaches of our future in space ("Big Change"). His political statements, while not overtly angry, are biting and succinct. Our social dysfunction is mirrored in his views on banking and Wall Street ("When The Sun Sets On The Trail") and the loss of our news media as a Fourth Estate ("Land Of The Blind"). Egenes crafts parables that require attention on the part of the listener. This is refreshing in an age of throwaway, cliché lyrics and formulaic hooks. Among the cast in his A-Team list of musicians are: Tony Gilkyson, Mark Andes, Rob Robinson, Gary Brandin, Terry "Buffalo" Ware, Amilia K. Spicer, Rob Burns, Shawn Nourse, The Sami Sisters, John Dodd, Jane Clark, and several others. They come from America, New Zealand, Australia, and parts of Europe. He views this process from the bottom up-not, as he says, from a top-down "producer's" vantage point-and likens it to an old fashioned Friday night Irish session, with each musician bringing his or her own unique personality into the mix. Playing along with his pals, Egenes brings ample chops to the table, bringing out all manner of stringed instruments including pedal steel, acoustic guitar, mandolin, dobro, B-bender Telecaster, banjo, and a bit of harmonica thrown in for good measure. The result is a cohesive mix of solid country and folk music that makes you want to take a picture and put it on your Facebook page.
