Road to Heaven
These compositions of voice and string take us farther and deeper than words or music alone, into a California that's both familiar and strange. The great waves, the shaking of the earth, the silence of redwood forests and the sound of falling water. Declarations of love and resistance, of prayer and transcendant beauty. Elegies for fallen trees and struggling fish populations. Narratives of exile and discovery, driving and demolition. Poetry and music take us across the geography of northern California, from the Pacific wave slope to the great basin and beyond, into the west of dreams. Jerry Martien and Shao Way Wu have been performing their poetry and bass compositions for nearly two decades on California's north coast. Martien has published a collection of poems, Pieces in Place, and Shell Game: A True Account of Beads and Money in North America. Wu has played and recorded with a number of artists and groups, notably Zuzu's Petals and Auntie Em, and teaches bass at Humboldt State University.
