Drink & the Devil
Heaven Street is an acoustic-based rock act resplendent with a passion and honesty that can touch even the most cynical of hearts. They traverse the emotional spectrum with richly textured songs of love, longing, lust, liberation, and libation. Comprised of vocalist and guitarist Alison Lee Freeman and guitarist Austin Nevins, Heaven ST harkens back to the heyday of Richard and Linda Thompson's musical and emotional roller coaster, adding their own unique twists and turns to the ride. Drink and the Devil was engineered and co-produced by Grammy winning mixing engineer, Ducky Carlisle at Room 9 from Outer Space. He is well know for his work with Bleu, Mike Viola, Susan Tedeschi, Joe Stump, and Barrence Whitfield. Freeman, the saucy balladeer and noted pool shark, has an eclectic musical background. Originally from Bath, Maine, she received her Bachelor of Music from Boston University in 1982. While at BU she explored classical music, particularly that of Brahms, Ives, Lennon and McCartney, but during the summer, she was the Chanteyman at the Maine Maritime Museum. Freeman also performed, for several years, with Roll & Go, a group which specializes in sea chanties. Freeman's rich, resonant voice and the bittersweet confessional tone of her songs is sometimes moving, sometimes witty, but always an intelligent examination of interpersonal relationships. She tells her stories of heartbreak, regret, and loss (often liberally doused with alcohol) with remarkable insight and sensitivity. Her lush and pure contralto belies her formal musical training and complements her compositions perfectly. She combines this beautiful instrument with diction that is extraordinarily precise, an unusual approach for music of this kind. But it works for Ms. Freeman because it instills the material with gravity and poetry. Guitarist Austin Nevins provides the perfect foil for Freeman's lyrics. His melodic, blues-infused stylings add a depth and dimension to the duo's music. A 1994 graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Nevins brings a fresh and original perspective to the folk genre. A student of guitar virtuoso Kevin Berry (Paula Cole, Carol Noonan, Dennis Brennan), Nevins' prowess challenges Freeman to reach even greater heights. In addition to Heaven ST, Nevins lends his talents to many artists including Josh Ritter, Rose Polenzani, Rose Cousins, and Antje Duvekot. Heaven Street offers vital songs about the precarious balance between love, sex and intemperance. Depth with humor, passion, poetry, and blues. A traditional folk act with modern arrangements and values.
