Product notities

1.) I Buried My Wife and Danced on Top of Her/Pull the Knife and Stick it Again/The Miller's Maggot This is a set of traditional jigs, appropriately named for this album. 2.) Lord Thomas and Fair Elander Kathryn learned this song from the great American singer Jean Ritchie. 3.) Helen of Kirkconnell This Romeo and Juliet-esque song was first given to me by traditional music aficionado Casey Neill. After some research, we found several versions and variations in the lyrics, but all with the same themes -- and the very gory sixteenth century duel. 4.) Drag Her 'Round the Road/The Girl That Broke My Heart/Unlucky in Love Another appropriately titled set of tunes, this time reels. I got the second tune in this set from the incomparable uilleann piper Tom Creegan. 5.) The Banks of Red Roses No collection of murder ballads would be complete without this old favourite. 6.) Seven Gypsies Though there are many version and tellings of this particular story, this version which we learned from Nic Jones is one of the few with quite this unfortunate an ending. 7.) The Cobbler's Daughter The amazing Kate Rusby of Penistone, S Yorkshire wrote this particular cautionary tale -- cautionary for both young passionate lovers and hot-tempered mothers. 8.) William Taylor I first heard this song sung by Fran McPhail of the Voice Squad during their visit to Seattle in the mid-90's. 9.) Little Musgrave/Sword in Hand This is one of my all-time favourite songs. When I set out to arrange it, I decided rather than trying to cut it short and risk losing some of the imagery, I'd try to put it into two parts and use a tune (a reel called Sword in Hand) as a segue. The first half of the song is put to a tune I learned from Llan De Cubel from Asturias. 10.) The Cook in the Kitchen/The Thief of Lochaber/Old Hag, You Have Killed Me/This is My Love, Do You Like Her? Three jigs and a slide. The second tune is a Scottish piping tune I learned from Kevin Auld. 11.) Annan Waters One of the great tragic love songs. Also introduced to me by The Voice Squad. --Hanz Araki.
