Henze's children's opera Pollicino premièred in 1980. It is a musical fairy tale that tells the story of Pollicino and his six brothers. His family is destitute. Pollicino overhears his parent's plan to abandon him and his siblings in the forest. Alone in the forest, animals guide them to a house hidden nearby where a cannibal and his wife live with their seven daughters. Clotilde, the eldest of the daughters, reveals to Pollicino that she and her sisters have long wanted to run away from home. Together with the help of the forest animals, the children turn this plan into reality. This production from the Vienna State Opera led by Gerrit Priessnitz premiered in April 2013.
