Spirit & Spice
With Spirit and Spice I set out to create a colorful tapestry, weaving together the rich traditions of jazz and Indian classical music. The confluence of these two powerful improvised forms, with liberal doses of funk, blues and contemporary minimalism has been at the core of my musical language for the past thirty years. Bringing together accomplished jazz musicians with master classical Indian artists is one of the great pleasures and successes of my work as a musician. In my compositions and in the studio I strive to create an environment that challenges and inspires, giving these talented musicians an opportunity to reach across continents and revel in the joy of speaking a common language. I call the album Spirit and Spice because Spirit is the source that connects us and fills us with passion, joy and vigor in our moments of spontaneous creation. Spice... well that's another matter. When I am not "cooking" musically, I am usually cooking in the kitchen. If I am whipping up a global dish at home or in the studio, I am keenly aware of the different flavors and ingredients that I bring to the mix. A little too much funk or not enough spice and it just won't "sing". In Spirit and Spice I believe I have found that perfect balance of flavors and textures.
