Battered Wooden Body
A Few Good Liars is a Wilmington, NC based trio with members, Ron Etheridge, Travis Shallow and Richard Welsh. Ron and Travis are both singer songwriters that count people like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earl, Jerry Joseph and Lowell George as their heros and they have both been paying their musical dues around Wilmington and the surrounding region for many years. Ron Etheridge is originally from Greenville, Mississippi and has that delta blues feel in his voice and his songs but does not write in the blues style. He has an original songwriting style and is not afraid to cross genres from one song to another. He has been in and around Wilmington, NC for the last 9 years and has developed a strong local following. Travis Shallow is originally from Greenville, North Carolina and came to Wilmington, NC to go to UNCW and to live near his older brother. He has been in Wilmington for 8 years and has also developed a strong local following. His songs tell stories of past loves, family struggles and the trials and tribulations of everyday life. His low, smooth voice and strong guitar playing make listening to his songs a pleasure. Richard Welsh plays steel guitar and dobro and adds a third vocal harmony to the beautiful songs that Travis and Ron write. He is the 'old man' of the band and has been playing music for over 35 years. Richard is originally from Williamsburg, Virginia. He went to college in Greensboro, NC in the late 70's and played guitar in many bands in and around Greensboro until Arthritis deformed his hands in the early 90's. After nearly giving up on music he started playing lap style guitar with the encouragement of dobro legend Jerry Douglas around 2003 and has become a strong and different player. He moved to Wilmington, NC with his wife in 2007 and started playing with Ron and Travis in 2009. A Few Good Liars have recently released their debut album Battered Wooden Body with the help of some musician friends. Zack Brindisi of Gloriana fame plays bass guitar. Local Wilmington favorite Jason Woolwine plays keyboards. Andrew Ratcliffe, who engineered the CD at his studio in Oxford MS, Tweed Recording Studios, plays the drums. It is a collection of songs that Ron and Travis wrote with an extra track that was written by the whole band while they were in the studio called Pinocchio. While searching for a concept for the album, Pinocchio became an inspiration being a truly famous liar. This song went from concept to being recorded around one microphone very late at night in the span of about two hours. The album name Battered Wooden Body is a lyric from the chorus of this song.
