Product notities

'Be constructive with your blues' is an impressive debut album by a young singer-songwriter based in South Germany, Fairhavens. Just having released his solo debut, he is working as a producer and songwriter for various other projects and currently in the process of recording his own sophomore effort. 'Everything I've been through makes me into the person I am today - musically and as a person.' Born in the Ruhr area in West Germany, he spent part of his childhood in Papua New Guinea. When the family moved to Southern Germany in the late 90s, a new life started. 'It wasn't easy' he recalls. The whole society was worlds apart from the easygoing pacific mentality that he had known, and adjusting took a while. 'Be constructive with your blues' showcases many of the emotional states he has been through, with songs ranging from quasi-suicidal ballads ('Homeward Bound Approximately') to infectious pop tunes ('Be constructive with your blues') to jaunts into contemporary gospel music ('A Love Supreme'). Fairhavens puts heartfelt, often poetic lyrics at the center, drawing from influences like Don Henley, Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan, but the melodies are just as strong. Imaginative arrangements, strong guitar work and a careful blending of acoustic and electronical elements ensure a unique exprerience that still feels very familiar; good, old-fashioned songwriting. The album starts it's musical journey with the stomping, hip-hop influenced 'I wish I pulled the strings', then delves directly into the angst-ridden rocker 'Protect Yourself'. 'Night Owls' is a downright love song, though without many of the typical clichées that usually entails - although, looking deeper you might still find one or two in there. 'Summer Winter Spring' digresses into an angry rap number somewhere in the middle 'it's a world full of blues/pain and vicious abuse/makes you wonder/are we all just predestined to lose?' but finds it's way back into the pop-rock flavour of the rest of the album with an exceptional guitar solo, courtesy of guest musician Jannis Eicker. 'A Love Supreme' and the yearning ballad 'Blind Faith' (featuring Jon Eicker on vocals) explore issues of faith and would probably feel perfectly at home on contemporary christian radio. The title track chugs along over a steady beat, weaving together some eighties synth pop with an infectious guitar line and witty lyrics. The Album ends strongly with some of it's stand-out tracks. 'Lady Liberty & Me', a quirky anecdote about the dangers of sacrificing personal freedom, borrows from both Janis Joplin and popular sentiment ('Is freedom so much more than just doing what you want to/or just nothing left to lose?/But even when they say that faith could move a mountain/I still have to decide which one I choose'). The album's longest cut and perhaps most political song is 'Millennium'. It features some of the album's lyrical high points, as well as more brilliant guitar work and a beautiful, Pink-Floydian feel towards the end, complete with radio chatter and slow chord progressions. 'Empty Fairgrounds' ends this collection of songs on a melancholic note. ('Come gather 'round friends/in the campfire's glow/harvest is near/and the summer must go') This is a beautiful collection of songs, with a common thread running throughout, telling stories of love, loss and redemption. A promising debut, that, while not perfect, certainly makes one anticipate more Fairhavens in the future.
