Little King of Dreams
Much is made about Americana music, and going back to one's roots. Dennis Roger Reed's music conjures up images of another time, while also dealing with issues that impact us everyday. His 'Broken Line' is a fine composition that deals with America's 'border crisis' from a very personal level. 'Panama Lane' treads similar territory, conjuring up cinematic images. Little King of Dreams could be called a concept album if that phrase was not so hackneyed. Primarily composed while traveling the American west and Canada as a member of the Andy Rau Band, Reed observed a rapidly disappearing way of life in the myriad of small towns they travelled through. But it's not just the original songs that make this recording so special. Reed is backed by a stellar cast of musicians from the bluegrass, folk and rock worlds. There are elements here of bluegrass music, swing, rock and folk, all seamlessly bound into a very listenable package.
