Hiding Behind Youth
Hiding Behind Youth was born in a bar room in Providence RI in April 2009, when a friendship was struck between Dennis Emsley and Josh Grabert of The Gamblin' Hands. In spite of the 25 year age difference between the two, a mutual musical interest was discovered and following months of performing together on the local bar scene, the chemistry between Emsley and The Gamblin' Hands was apparent. The two eventually decided to piggyback their planned recording projects and in the summer of 2009 The Gamblin' Hands (including Grabert, Jake Dady and Burt Masse) joined Emsley in the studio and began recording. What came of this collaboration was a milestone work for both The Gamblin' Hands and Emsley. Far Away Cars, the Gamblin' Hands debut 5 song EP (available on CD Baby) was completed in December 2009 and features Grabert, Dady & Masse. Hiding Behind Youth finished up production in January 2010 and, in addition to Emsley and The Gamblin' Hands, features Providence RI musicians Greg Lee, Brian Cass and Adam Newell. Combining the songwriting of the older Emsley with this youthful group of musicians - the title Hiding Behind Youth seemed a natural. From the upbeat opener, Kindness, this CD grabs your attention with Grabert's catchy guitar work, Emsley's thoughtful lyrics and Dady's harmony vocals. Greg Lee's piano work is featured on the next tracks; Round Trip and the apolitical Declaration. Next up are the introspective Closer Than Some (with Grabert once again featured on electric guitar) and When The Smoke Was Comin' (introducing the exceptional guitar talent: Adam Newell), a song inspired by the 1948 ecological tragedy that struck Donora PA. Lee's piano returns again alongside Emsley's lilting chord changes in Had Enough Time and Like The Seasons. Then Newell's guitar once again takes charge on New Cold War; in which the southern rock flavor of Newell solos juxtapose with Emsley's overtly political lyrics. Grabert and Emsley then work their guitars, intertwining Grabert's solos with Emsley's electric & acoustic rhythms on You've Always Known. Shadow Rider brings the disc to a close with Grabert and Newell joining forces with Lee's Hammond Organ in dramatic fashion; a song sure to conjure up memories of vintage Pink Floyd. This CD features all new Dennis Emsley compositions that have the unmistakable feel of classic rock. Hiding Behind Youth will make you smile, make you think, and make you want to hear it again and again!
