No Borders became No Borders because David wanted to produce an acoustic guitar compilation featuring the sounds from around the world that inspire his arrangements and original compositions. In No Borders David captures a sound and a spirit that is uniquely his own, flavored with familiar Latin, Cuban, Flamenco, jazz, pop, bossa nova and finger-picking affects. His tone is sometimes moody, sometimes upbeat. 'Hallelujah' has sentimental value as David toured Europe with Leonard Cohen in the mid-70s when 'Bird On a Wire' was wildly popular. David's original songs 'Refugio' and 'Malaga' are reminiscent of the days when David played in Sofrito, a popular Cuban salsa band in the San Francisco Bay Area. With 'Fingers', 'Pacifica' and 'Wind and Sea', also originals, David was stimulated by the finger-picking styles he played when he was with Buffy St. Marie and again, with Leonard Cohen. In his twenties, David studied classical music in Spain. His arrangements of Ralph Towner's 'The Reluctant Bride' and 'Etude' by Carcassi are influenced by that time. David's flamenco sounds are most strongly implied in 'Santa Cruz', 'Malaga' and 'Hermosa'. Brazilian influences are felt in David's versions of Baden Powell's 'Consalacao' and Antonio Jobim's 'Triste'. 'Good Riddance' (The Time of Your Life) by Green Day adds a pop/bluegrass feel to No Borders, while Lupo, an original by David features layer upon layer of loopings in a fun, upbeat piece. Of course, jazz has had a tremendous influence on David and can be heard throughout this hybrid of sounds. All in all, No Borders arouses the global senses and will carry you as far as your imagination allows. Let it take you there.
