Review of 'Hidden Pond' from PERFORMING SONGWRITER March/April '05. 'Hidden Pond', the debut release by guitarist-songwriter David Coe, is an all-instrumental, acoustic-based treasure. The album showcases not only his fluid, expressive playing on all kinds of stringed instruments, but also his strong sense of melody as well as compositional and orchestral dynamics. The title track, which starts off with some intricate, James Taylor-like fingerpicking, sets the stage for an uplifting hook that builds in intensity before segueing back to the opening theme. If you're a fan of phenomenal guitar playing, check out Coe's brilliant arpeggiated cross-picking on 'True Divided Light', or his soulful nylon string workout on 'Sun Haven'. Whether you're a guitar freak or simply a fan of good music, once you hear this breathtaking release, you're going to find yourself playing it again and again. - RP.
