Just a Memory
David Chaney was born in Portsmouth, VA on March 24 th, 1962 and raised in Winston-Salem NC. David always had a love of music from the time he was 3 years old. He used to lie in bed at night listening to and singing along with all the great songs of the 60's played on his small AM transistor radio. The decade between 1965 and 1975 was a golden time in music where David derived the most inspiration. He used to love to sing the great hits of that time. His strongest performing influence was none other than Elvis Presley. David also gives credit to his Aunt Karen, his mother's youngest sister for giving him his musical taste. Karen was only 12 years older than David and lived with their family for a short time. The times they spent together singing and dancing in the family living room always stayed with David as his love of music grew. From that point he always envisioned himself singing in front of people. He started singing in church at an early age and continued through his mid-teens. It wasn't until 1998 at the age of 36 when David returned to singing live. Kathy, his wife, and his mother, Marian encouraged him to perform in a passenger talent show while on a cruise ship. He sang Elvis's "Suspicious Minds" and received a standing ovation for his performance. He was later asked to sing with the actual paid performers the cruise line had employed for the trip. It was Christmas 2002 when Kathy bought David a $10.00 toy karaoke as a joke. Little did they know that would jump-start David's singing career at the tender young age of 40! He began to solo and sing with the choir at church. He would play gospel performance tracts in his home stereo and sing along with his toy karaoke when he practiced. In late 2003 he upgraded his sound system and began to perform for local nursing homes and assisted living facilities singing Elvis's gospel and popular hits. In 2004 David continued his tour of retirement homes and began to sing for local outdoor festivals. Once during one of his performances, many could not believe it was him actually singing and accused him of lyp-syncing to an actual Elvis recording. David took this as a great compliment. By 2005 David had began recording CD's from karaoke tracks at New Horizon Recording Studio in Kernersville, NC while continuing his retirement home tours, appearances at other churches, and local outdoor festivals. In 2006 David happened upon the Website for Affinity Music in Nashville, TN. He contacted the office of Don Reed and was able to get an audition at the March 4th showcase. His performance of 'American Trilogy' brought the house down. It was a short time later on May 22nd, that David recorded his first commercially marketable single, 'Just A Memory' at Sound Control Recording Studio in Nashville,TN. David and Kathy live in the small town of Walnut Cove, NC. Together, they run a mortgage brokerage while getting his musical career off and running. With the Lord's blessing, they know that great things are yet to come!
