Zetland to the Antipodes
Music from the land Down Under. 'The Zetland Project', my debut solo album, has been 18 months in the making. The music was mainly inspired by a trip I made from Australia to the Shetland Islands (north of mainland Scotland)in March 2005. Shetland instilled in me an unexpected sense of familiarity and belonging. Though only a short visit I'll remember it forever. Over the years I've been lucky enough to have played with some fine musicians. We've banged out some great and not so great covers of mostly RnB & Rock songs in pubs, clubs, concerts, parties and BBQ's - in towns, cities and the bush. In contrast, this project was a chance for me to paint a musical picture, a story laced with emotion, mystery, melody and power. My influences include Pink Floyd, Snowy White, Dire Straits, Joe Satriani, Bruce Hornsby, The Corrs.......... The music on this first CD has both Classic Rock and Celtic influences. The lyrics have a mixture of influences from Viking, Celtic & Western cultures. The theme of the music is based on the transition from one hemisphere to the other - from the Shetland Islands to Australia - from Zetland to the Antipodes (Z2A). Over thousands of years, for one reason or another, people have ventured from their homelands to new lands. Mostly driven by war, religion, greed or survival, man has either invaded or migrated then adapted to new societies. Vikings of old were renowned for raiding foreign lands and integrating with new cultures. In a strange parity, the descendants of Vikings of more recent times have migrated throughout the world and mixed with new cultures. (different method - same outcome).
