Tales of Love Mystery & Woe
In the summer of 2010, Nora and I decided to make another pilgrimage to Memphis, Tennessee. The object was to record an album at the legendary Sun Studio. We have recorded 2 albums there before and a couple of singles. This time out we determined that this would be a primarily acoustic effort with Nora and I providing all of the instrumentation and vocals. We wanted a more intimate, personal sound. As the songwriting developed, we also came to the conclusion that the songs were mostly relationship songs. So with the concepts of relationships and a more acoustic, intimate feel, we headed down I57 to Memphis, with our acoustic guitars, mandolin, dobro, upright bass, and some new songs. Although, the tunes were based upon love, won and lost, we really expanded the width of the storytelling to encompass other types of love and longing. The songs range from bright and playful, to dark and somber. We spent 3 nights in the studio laying down tracks and working with the engineer at Sun, Matt Ross-Spang. We had worked with Matt before so he was really instrumental in helping us get the most out of our performances. He even plays electric guitar on the track 'Time To Change Blues'. Matt used alot of vintage microphones to capture that Memphis mojo. We hope you will enjoy listening to the songs as much as we enjoyed writing and recording them. Thanks for giving us a listen.
