Across a Cold Black Velvet Sky
According to legend, one day about two thousand years ago, Rabbi Hillel was asked to explain the Torah (the first five books of the bible) while standing on one foot. The way the story is usually recounted, the rabbi spouted some sort of nonsense about the golden rule. Here's what really happened: Hillel stood on one foot and quoted Billy Joel, saying unto the doubters: 'I thought I was the Duke of Earl when I made it with a red-haired girl in the Chevrolet; we were keeping the faith.' It was in the spirit of this most profound wisdom that I composed the songs on this album. What better way to illustrate this than to give you a sampling of lyrics from a few of the songs... My darling Clementeen You were never any beauty queen You'd never had a date at seventeen I had my eye on you ------------Clementeen I've heard the beach bums talk about aquamarine Fading slowly into emerald green They don't know what these colors mean Because they have never seen them Shot across a cold, balck velvet sky -------------Midnight Rainbow We smoked in the boys' room We smoked in the girls' room Reached third base in the teachers' lounge Short-sheeted the homecoming queen We kissed in the girls' gym We kissed in the boys' gym Slit-skirted the boys' graduation gowns And hijacked the dean's limousine ---------------Class Clown in A Party Gown Well you nailed yourself upon a cross of soap And you hung it upside down, dangling from a rope In the village square, the farmers came to see They scratched their heads, said, 'What's she supposed to be?' I said, 'It's just a phase she's going through She'll be on to something different in a decade or two.' -----------------Cracked Love Song He caught us at the rally And he chased us through the alley Smashing rows of parking meters with his head His significant other And his wife and his brother He swore he'd see the three of us dead ---------------The Way of the Fen This record does not sound anything at all like John Hiatt, Jethro Tull, Pearl Jam, Johnny Cash, Buddy Guy, Mahalia Jackson, Eminem, John Coltrane or Frederic Chopin. But if this sounds like a pretty good mix tape to you, you just might want to come for a ride with me across a cold, black velvet sky.
