Go! You Packers Go!
The Green Bay Packers were admitted to The American Professional Football Association on August 27, 1921. The name was changed to The National Football League less than a year later and the team will celebrate it's 90 year anniversary as a member of the league August 27, 2011. "Go! You Packers Go", the team's very first fight song, was written ten years later by Eric Karll, who was born in Reedsburg, WI. The Packers had won two world championships in a row by this time-1929 and 1930-and were about to make it three when musician/composer Karll was compelled to write the song about his favorite team. It is where the modern day cheer of "Go, Pack, go!" originated as well as the catchphrase we've all heard so many times of "Go, Pack!" This summer will mark the 80th anniversary of the venerable anthem, which is among the oldest of all the fight songs in the NFL. When it was decided to release the second "Tailgate Tunes" CD a couple of years ago, we thought it would be a great opener for the album. Having heard only the instrumental version for many years, the thought was to include the song with the lyrics. We were unable to find a copy anywhere. The definitive version is the instrumental by The National Football League Marching Band, conducted by Bernard Green that came out with those of 12 other teams on an RCA release in 1960. However, no version with the lyric portion included could be located anywhere, not even on an old '78 record. We were finally informed by the Karll family that to their knowledge, none existed. They gave us their blessing to record the song at our own expense, which we did. However, that recording has remained unreleased until now and is track 2 on this CD. We also considered making a recording of the song with an "old-time" sound, much like would have been heard back in the 30's when it was written. We were finally able to make that come about in a session last Nov. 27. We secured the services of a talented, nine-piece area wedding band, had the song arranged specifically for their instruments and it is the lead track on this CD. An area dance hall was rented for the afternoon session and we recorded it "live." We are pleased to present to you now "Go! You Packers Go!" as it was performed that afternoon by "Curly's Curmudgeon Band"-welcome and enjoy! "Go! You Packers Go!"
