Hear & Now
The 'Cuesta Jazz 2010 - Hear and Now' CD The Cuesta College instrumental jazz department has been hard at work recording a professional quality CD with all of it's best groups. This release includes recordings from The Cuesta Night Band, The Cuesta Jazz Ensemble, Chorinho, the Cuesta Jazz Combo and The Cuesta Jazz Faculty. Also featured on the recording are famous guest artists, saxophonist Bill Liston and lead trumpet Wayne Bergeron. There is a very fun variety on this 10 track CD. The first three tunes are from the locally famous Cuesta Night Band made up of local professional jazz musicians. They play a Bill Liston arrangement of the favorite tune 'Georgia' and even feature Bill playing on the tune. This is followed by an exciting big band samba and then the aptly titled 'Straight Ahead' written by Cuesta faculty George Stone. The next track features a Cuesta Jazz Faculty group playing the beautiful tune 'Blue in Green'. Chorinho is the name of a group at Cuesta College that plays the Choro music of Brazil. This group has achieved a special level of notoriety at the school by playing this unique music in a very compelling way. The last four tracks on the CD are from the Cuesta Jazz Ensemble, which is the student Big Band at Cuesta College. This group has a long history of excellence and was awarded first place in the Community College division at the very prestigious Reno Jazz Festival. Track 7, 'Sing, Sang, Sung' is an exciting clarinet feature based on the tune Benny Goodman made famous, 'Sing, Sing, Sing'. 'Wyrgly' is a progressive adventure of a big band piece, featuring complex harmonies, a taste of free jazz and even a wailing distorted guitar solo. The CD finishes with a beautiful arrangement of Pat Metheny's 'Minuano' featuring one of the greatest trumpet players of our time, Wayne Bergeron. This CD is not only a great showcase for what is happening in jazz at Cuesta College, but since the whole CD was recorded and mixed on campus it is a great achievement for the recording arts program. But even more than that, this CD is a great CD to just put on and listen. The musicianship and recording quality and variety all come together to make something that is fun to listen to.
