Product notities

"We have something to say. If we're afraid to say it then we may as well just write sappy love songs." Mike Cerruti says of working on Droppin' Bombs, the latest release by San Francisco punk band Cousin Dale. On Droppin' Bombs, Cousin Dale proves that they can tackle politics and violence while still preserving the light-hearted humor and appeal that won the band such a devoted local following. These guys don't take long to get to the point. Droppin' Bombs blasts open with Fun and Games, a song about our current political landscape where a promised change for the better appears to be just more of the same. Freaked Out follows and slams that point home, 'The country is in economic and environmental turmoil, and our political leaders seem totally incapable of mapping a way out of the mess,' says Brian Pomon, founder of the quartet, 'Instead of rationality, kindness and compassion, we're faced with more greed, hatred, and violence. We want to start a musical discussion about this - with each other and our fans.' Getting the music to the people means collaborating with a producer who understands the theme and tone of the message. For Droppin' Bombs, Cousin Dale returns to a familiar Bay Area favorite Adam Rossi, engineer and producer on Cousin Dale's most recent projects, Quickly, Rapidly, Efficiently and Fast, Getaway, and Words That Rhyme. 'It's not my job to be the cultural filter between artist and public, nor would I want to be.' says Rossi, 'Last time I checked, this is America where anyone can express themselves artistically, politically, religiously, or socially. It is entirely up to parents to be the early filters, the education systems to develop and foster critical thinking, and the mature public to be able to engage in reasonable debate on these controversial topics. Cousin Dale has grown up in the past few years, and I'm glad I got to be a part of that.' It's a punk driven effort this time around, but they haven't completely abandoned their pop sensibilities. "I became a fan of Cousin Dale because of the poppy hooks, catchy melodies, and that booming guitar sound" says newcomer Brad Nelson, "come on, it wouldn't be a Cousin Dale record without a few five part harmonies, I think we found a good balance." Cousin Dale may have matured musically but the band still attempts to poke fun when they can. Bottom Line is a whimsical attack on the corporate American workplace. 'It's probably my favorite song on the record,' says Pomon. 'I lost sleep for ten years with a company that tossed me aside the very minute the bottom line was threatened. It's my turn to tell them to f*** off.' Now that's something we can all relate to.
