Ants in the Sugar
Ants in the Sugar is the brand new final album by Winnipeg noise-pop band Cone Five. It is also the band's most stylistically and dynamically diverse offering, bringing an eight-year history to an adventurous close with everything from bluegrass-inflected lullabies to feedback-drenched, prog-inspired dirges. New on this album is the sharing of lead vocal duties by Matt McLennan and Leslie Oldham, a male/female pairing which adds even more to the overall feeling of stylistic and dynamic tension. Of it's five-album catalog (the fourth album of which, Fond Of, cracked the Canadian campus radio top 50), the band is most pleased with this release. Fans of the Smashing Pumpkins, the Pixies and other noisy, not-quite-metal bands will love the album for it's aggressive delivery, excessive guitar overdubs and odd-metre riffing; but fans of the gentler side of life will also find much sweetness, vulnerability and a wry sense of humour. Ants in the Sugar is the definitive indie album for those who are entire-album-oriented in their approach to new music.
