Deck The Halls Traditional Song from Wales/arr. Lennie Niehaus Publisher Kendor Music Let's put some music on and Deck The Halls! I love this arrangement because it's bright, up beat, and a terrific way to start an album! Kinda sets the mood for the Holidays! Swingin' fun that's jazzy and sassy! You'll here throughout the entire CD the addition of String Bass, Drum Set and Percussion! Resonet in Laudibus (14th Century Christmas Carol from 'Moosburger Graduale') Anonymous/arranged and edited by Walter Blanton Publisher Medici Music Press There was always singing in my house - both parents sang. My mother had a beautiful voice and my siblings and I all sang - almost a Von Trapp setting! But then I wised up and realized at 7 years old, I was an Alto, and was going to remain in the middle voice all my life. I loved knowing this! I had my own different notes to sing! This particular carol brings forth the purity of singing a brass instrument and really caught my attention. I knew I wanted to have this in my library. Riu, Riu, Chiu (Traditional Spanish Carol)/arr. David Marlatt Publisher Eight Note Publications This simple melody captures the flavors of Spain - dates from around 1550. It's a great arrangement that flits by - - too bad it doesn't have maraca's! Swingin' Sounds of Christmas James Pierpoint/arr Jack Gale Jingle Bells Publisher Music Express I so enjoy playing any arrangement that Jack Gale does because I get to go back to my Dance Band roots of playing! The guys really get cookin' on this one, and you've probably figured out there's a String Bass playing! Ha ha ha - I love thinking outside the box! It's a swing arrangement and sounds cool! Wayne's the Man! Gesu Bambino (The Infant Jesus) Pietro A. Yon/arr. Arthur Frackenpohl Publisher Kendor Music The soft tones of the melody in this one sound so beautiful in a church setting. This really gives the quintet a chance to use a different character and color scheme. White Christmas Irving Berlin/Arr Luther Henderson Publisher Hal Leonard Estate of Irving Berlin The first time this was used was in the Irving Berlin's motion picture 'Holiday Inn'; the second time it was used, was for the WWII era 'White Christmas' starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kay, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen. This arrangement includes the lead in to the theme. Sweet! It's not the Holiday's until I hear this. 'Need Little Christmas' (We Need A Little Christmas) arr. Mary Weber Jerry Co Music I couldn't resist writing this a a Polka! From the musical 'Mame'. O Tannenbaum Traditional Carol/Arr Edgar Herzog Publisher Advanced Music Well, if you think you know trees and New Orleans, you're in for a real treat with this rousing arrangement! Why not decorate the tree with Mardi Gras beads and dance down the street with your decorated umbrella and party mask? Enjoy! My Dreidle Variations Traditional/Arr. Bill Holcombe & Bill Holcombe Jr. Publisher Musicians Publications The first time we read through this, I cracked up a few moments in to the piece when I realized just how much fast lip trilling Steve (French Horn) was doing! This is a wonderful lively arrangement and a real toe tapper! Trill On Steve! Huron Carol (Native North American) Traditional/Arr Chris Morrison Publisher Eighth Note Publications The moment this starts, I feel transported to another time, another place. I have a place in my heart for the tribes of Native Americans. The moving sixteenth notes in the trumpet parts have present an underlying tension within the soaring melody. Jason is playing his part on his Bb - I am playing my Flugle Horn. This combination gives a different richness to the sound. A Basque Noel Traditional/Arr Catherine McMichael Publisher C. Alan Publications A Basque Noel is a medley of three medieval carols from what is now southern France and known still as the Basque region, surrounding the French Pyrenees, near the Spanish border. The carols are Noel Nouvelet (Sing We Now of Christmas), The Angel Gabriel and Masters of This House. The Sleighride From 'Thirteen German Dances K605' Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Arr Stephen Wick Publisher Broadbent & Dunn Ltd Yes! You did hear a horse with sleigh bells leading in to this! I've always loved horses, and, this CD is my representation of that! Also of note (no pun intended) is how I 'dressed' up this arrangement. Aside from the quintet, there is a call for five (5) pitched bells and sleigh bells. What I heard in my head was the sound of a Toy Piano - and found one here in town owned by Bob Chamberlin! I loved it the second I heard the sound! Making her CD recording debut is Mary Zubert on the Schoenhut! ! ! The Schoenhut Toy Piano Co. is still in business! Really! Many thanks to Bill Chamberlin for letting us use and record his Tiny Toy Piano. Still, Still, Still Traditional Austrian Carol/Arr David Marlatt Publisher Eighth Note Publications The gentle lead in directly into this carol from Mozart's 'The Sleighride' was all but a dream of Sleigh Bells. Picture a horse and buggy fading away from a castle in the countryside headed in to Vienna to St. Stephens Cathedral for an evening Christmas concert. Christmas Carol Festival Traditional/Arr Paul Nagle Publisher Musicians Publications Yes folks! It's time to Sing Along With Mitch - - uh, make that MARY! Sorry I don't have a bouncing ball, but let's sing some Carols! Joy to the World, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, We Three Kings, and Angles We Have Heard On High. There'll be some hot apple cider waiting for you when you're done! Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers Leon Jessel/Arr Thomas Gordon Campbell Publisher Kendor Music What a great way to stand guard by the Christmas Tree with little Soldiers! Written in 1897, this character piece is still performed today - - the most visually exciting interpretation is by the Rockettes! The music really paints a great picture. The Christmas Song Mel Torme/Arr. Wayne Coniglio Publisher Cimmeron Music Publications This staple of the holiday season features lush Sammy Nestico type voicings that I'm sure you'll love. Let It Snow Styne - Cahn/arr Arthur Frackenpohl Publisher Kendor Music What a lovely swing arrangement for the Quintet! A great song to hum along with while sitting by the living room window, sitting on the sofa wrapped up in a nice warm blanket reading a book, the fire crackling briskly! Mmmmmmm. Sleigh Ride Leroy Anderson/arr Mary Weber Unpublished/ The concept of this album is based around my favorite holiday - - the lead in with Sampson (Percheron) with real bells slung around his big neck is perfect! Of course I got this portion recorded of horses back in August - - the hottest summer St. Louis had in a long time - - but we got it done! Everyone got to do a horse whinny for the ending ~ I've done the whinny for over 30 years and figured, what the heck, let's ALL whinny! Alan gets the credit for sounding like a Reindeer (or was that a Moose?). Holly and the Ivy Traditional/Arr Wayne Coniglio Public Domain Unpublished Originally recorded for clarinet and strings, I asked Wayne if he would re-write it for us. It's very poignant. Wexford Carol Traditional Irish/Arr Jeff Cottrell Publisher Cimarron This carol comes from Ireland dating back to the 12th C. I love playing the beautiful opening melody in the low register of the trumpet part; Wayne and George settle down on a drone - - just like bagpipes, and this gives a haunting feel to the backdrop. I wonder what Ireland is like in winter? The Little Drummer Boy Davis - Onorati - Simeone/Arr Keith Snell Publisher Belwin Mills Alan does a fantastic job setting up this popular contemporary carol (1958) with a feel of biggness from the tom toms and bass drums. More often than not, I'd wish to have drums added to just about every piece on a program. I especially like this arrangement for this reason - - it sounds empty when Alan isn't there! Swingin' Sounds of Christmas Jolly Old St. Nicholas Traditional/Arr Jack Gale Publisher Music Express I've often wondered with a great jazz arrangement like this - - how do you really know just how Jolly St. Nick is? Pretty happy guy I'd guess! ! Jason does a fantastic job with his jazz solo at the break. Did I say break? Time for some mulled wine! You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch Hague - Seuss/Arr Bill Bjornes Publisher Cimerron Music Oh how I love the smokey cabaret, sultry music and a mean slow tune! George lays down a great 'bone solo after Steve. Jason got a chance to scream some notes on this one, and what a great bass line and drum kit! Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Johnny Marks/Arr Arthur Frackenpohl Publisher Kendor/Owner St. Nicholas Music/Kendor This is such a great song to play for children (of all ages!) that I love to put on any program! The begining sounds like Scott Joplin wrote it - - how much fun it is to hear little children sing along while we're playing, their eyes brightly shining, belting out a song they love! Swingin' Ukrainian Christmas (Carol of the Bells) Mykola Leontovych/Arr Lennie Niehaus Publisher Kendor Music This is such a great carol ~ especially in this jazzy arrangement! Leontovych wrote this in 1916 as a choir miniature work with a 4 note motif as an ostinato. This was written as an assignment for a Harmony course he was taking by correspondence! It premiered at Carnegie Hall Oct. 5, 1921. We Wish You A Merry Christmasamba Traditional/Arr Edgar Herzog Publisher Advance Music Well, we've come to the end of the recording, sad I know, but I found the neatest little arrangement of We Wish You! This is really laid back, lots of layering and a smoooooth Bossa Nova to get things started! So, put you dancin' slippers on, grab your sweetie, and dance to the Samba till it stops!
