Chucky told me that he had a song that he wanted to "share" with me. So I went over to his Fruit and Flower Store in Kauai. We sat down in the back warehouse area as he rehearsed his newest creation, "Doing a Mighty Thing." Although extremely musical, he wasn't formally trained and could not write his music down. So as he sang this song on his guitar, I notated the melody on a piece of folder paper that I had. Amazingly, Chucky is able to communicate the feel and style of the song through the inflection of his voice and the rhythm of his guitar playing. Chucky said that I should "give" it to the youth group, for them to sing. (I still have the song, and I am ashamed to say that I haven't done anything with it.) That was one of my first musical encounters with Chucky Boy Chock. Since then I have come to appreciate his diligence in his craft of song writing. He seriously considers each word and phrase; the rise and fall of his melodies. He always comes to me prepared and knows what he wants. I learned that my job in our relationship was to orchestrate, and arrange his songs for others to enjoy. Sometimes it is for the congregation to sing. At other times it is a song that should be recorded on CD. Chucky is a gifted song writer, whose songs have been sung by many artists in the Hawaiian music scene - Iz, the Brothers Cazimero, Malani Bilyeu, to mention a few. Since coming to Jesus, most of Chucky's songs revolve around his relationship with his Savior, Jesus. He doesn't care to be associated with the music scene - been there, done that. But even though he's left the music scene, Chucky continues to write his songs and share them with me. So I have been faced with the awesome responsibility of how to share his songs with the public. I think you will agree that they need to be heard. On this CD, "Celebrate," Chucky has invited other artists to perform with him. Robbie Kaholokula lends his smooth singing voice, xylophone and ukulele playing to round out many of the numbers. There is a guest appearance from Malani Bilyeu and his powerful vocal talent. Pam Chock, Chucky's wife and the ladies from her Bible study - Lehua Ornellas, Dondi Ho, Lanice Pullano, D'Lissa Ianucci, Kuulei Punua-Johnson perform a song as "Leinani." Other local singers from the island of Kauai include - Barry Miyasato, Domi Ragsac, Boni Lopez, Donnie Ines and Hoku Roland. Chucky plays acoustic guitar, steel drums, pan flute, marimbas, and percussions on this album. John Leonard Loo plays keyboards. Kalani Dabin is on the bass guitar. Jon Sugibayashi solos on the alto saxophone. We hope that you enjoy the songs and that it will find a place in your listening library and your congregation. Thank you to CD baby and what it affords to people like us in on the island of Kaua'i. We have an avenue to share our songs!
