The music came first. As a gigging vocalist and a fan of live jazz, Christine Fagan has grown to know and love many jazz instrumentals, some composed by fellow musicians and friends and was inspired to write lyrics to some of them. 'ONCE' is a hommage of sorts to the Ottawa jazz scene. Eight of the twelve tracks were composed by musicians with ties to Ottawa, and Fagan has written lyrics to them, as well as to Sam Rivers' 'Beatrice', and the second movement from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony (the title track) . She also performs a fresh take on the standard 'Nature Boy', as well as a jazz arrangement of the traditional folk song 'Early One Morning'. ....'All in all, it's a nifty - and ambitious - idea, and she pulls it off with style. Allthough she is supported by a stellar crew of Ottawa musicians, including guitarist Roddy Ellias, bassist John Geggie and drummer Jamie Gilickson, it's Fagan's sweet, slightly husky voice that is always the centre of attention.' -Doug Fisher, Ottawa Citizen Christine was also a founding member of the four-woman vocal group CANTARRA, for which she sang, composed and arranged. Her other projects include a 2009 collaboraion with the Impressions Of Jazz Orchestra entitled 'When Joni Met Mingus', featuring selections from the historic collaboration of 1979 and new jazz arrangements to other Joni Mitchell songs.
