Reaction is a welcomed and refreshing breath of fresh air in a seemingly stagnant hip-hop scene. Earning his stripes on the local circut, Bay Area based rapper Catalyst shows no intention of getting stupid any time soon. In fact, what i found to be this album's greatest strong point is that is it clear; Catalyst chooses his words very carefully, something you don't hear much of in these modern times. With lines like ''Paint something so vivid you could live it while i tell it/ comprehend the canvas whatch the image that develops/ if you value self and purpose is it worth it to embelish?/ see you are what you rapping watch the image that you're selling.('Track 6: If I Could'.)' Not only do his lyrics provoke a contemplative reflection that inspires the very title of the album, but his use of syntax and clear articulation enable the listner to hang on every line, even if the content is too adavnced too keep up with, and though this is his debut album, he delivers with a veteran style that is impossible to ignore. The album, recorded at GetemJaf's and co-produced by Mjaf and Billion, features tracks with Bad Poetry, Jmo, Mjaf, and Nathan Coast of Midwest Coast, who features on on one my personal favorites, track 11, entilted 'One Day.' I promise Reaction will not only be a white-knuckle exhibition of tolerance (as many 'rappers' albums have turned out to be this year), but rather a legitimately intellectually stimualting experience. -Elliot Wright.
