Carmen Vitis Adnet was born in Vitória (Brazil), and started to play the piano at the age of 4. She moved to Rio de Janeiro, finishing her studies at the Federal University, starting an active career as a pianist, performing solo and with orchestra around the whole country. She won several national competitions, including the one to choose the Brazilian representative for the Chopin Competition in Warsaw - the first after World War II - where she was laureated and the audience´s favorite. The pianist perfected her Chopin style with Polish professor Josef Turczynski, attended master classes by Edwin Fischer and Alfred Cortot, after also being laureated at the International Piano Competition in Munich. She married Austrian pianist Hans Graf, living and working in Vienna for more than 50 years. During this time, she finished her musical studies with Bruno Seidlhofer and recorded Chopin's F-minor concerto with Vienna´s Symphony Orchestra under Hans Swarowsky. Adnet performed as a Chopin specialist in Europe, North and South America, became a professor at the Hochschule fuer Musik (former Academy of Music, nowadays University) and was a visiting professor for 2 years at the Indiana University (Bloomington, U.S.A.). Carmen Vitis Adnet is an emeritus professor at the University of Viena, gives lecture recitals and is invited as jury in many international competitions. ¶ She was awarded the Rio Branco Order by the Brazilian government and the "Ehrenkreuz 1. Klasse" by the Austrian government; in addition, she is one of only 10 recipients of the Villa-Lobos Medal, for disseminating Brazilian music abroad.
