Waking the Sound
The Brokenmusicbox began as a moniker for Kimberly Contreras's solo recording project. Though she did perform live on a few occasions, the name came to reflect her ever continuing battle with her home four track recorder and the ensuing collection of tapes (and tapes and more tapes...). In 2003, Kimberly met fellow musician Tony Wentzel through work at The Annex Recording Studios and the two began sporadically playing and recording together, though both were still part of other projects/bands. In 2006, on a whim, the two began to collaborate with a keyboardist friend to further expand the sound of their home recordings. Unbeknownst to them at the time, these demos would soon become the foundation for "Waking the Sound" - their debut album. Though all of the writing, arranging, and production was done by Tony and Kimberly, the album features contributions from an interesting list of notable friends and musicians: Drums - Jay Pellicci (31 knots), Rhodes/Organ- Jason Ruck (Film School), Bass- Kevin Hite (Idaho Falls), Piano- Jeff Hashfield (Pleasure Kills, Hi-Nobles), Lead guitar (Jim Wentzel).
