The Bright Wings Chorus is a group of ten powerful singers who first came together to record a collection of original shape-note songs composed by Brendan Taaffe. Shape-note singing is an early New England tradition marked by stark harmonies and driving rhythm. Bright Wings does this as well as anybody: their tight sound making the chords sparkle and making these old hymn texts fly. Taaffe's compositions stay close to the traditional aesthetic but incorporate a variety of influences-taking melodies from Irish fiddle tunes, Appalachian ballads, and Zimbabwean mbira pieces, using texts inspired by a wide range of contemporary composers. The members of The Bright Wings Chorus are Adam Jacob Simon, Mason Gohl, Gideon Crevoshay, Wheaton Squier, Brendan Taaffe, Rachel Gordon, Addie Rose Holland, Katie Trautz, Julia Wayne, and Emily Thompson.
