So often music is described as a language in itself. Just as the spoken word is used to communicate an idea or sentiment, music is often capable of achieving the same result. Through the simplest structures to the most complex, if a piece is able to communicate an intended feeling or emotion then it is probably viewed as 'good' or maybe even 'great.' The music that Brian Quezergue has composed and recorded for his debut CD does exactly that. He brings the listener on a winding journey of harmonic textures, rhythmic variations and melodic beauty all the while creating a wide array of moods at varying levels of intensity. Brian does this is by using the bass guitar not just in a supportive role but as a melodic instrument, singing above the rest of the ensemble or as an interactive voice during another musician's solo. Throughout this recording Brian's music achieves a delicate balance. On one hand, the songs are intricately arranged but at the same time he has allowed space for each instrument to speak, avoiding the common tendency to 'overwrite.' Each musician is given the freedom to interject spontaneous ideas and create a musical conversation which in turn gives the music an excitement and honesty not often heard these days. In each song Brian uses his deep understanding of harmony to create rich and sophisticated chord progressions for each musician to improvise. Much like a painter uses his own unique combination of colors to create a scene, Brian uses harmony in his own unique way to create many different textures all the while maintaining an authentic sound. There was much joy that went into making this recording and hopefully the listener will experience that same joy when hearing it. As a composer and player, Brian has much to say in his music and has begun to say it here. Now we can only hope for more!
