Brand New Mountain Speeches / Various
Brand New Mountain Speeches is a response. A community of artists in Oklahoma City came together to engage with and wrestle with Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) over a two-month time period. We gathered to read the whole passage out loud, not just observing, but also listening to it and meditating on it, allowing it to sink into the cracks and crevices of our hearts. We wanted it to affect us, get under our skins, confuse us, inspire us, and convict us. We listened, we saw, we observed. Then we responded. We created, capturing all those colors, images, and sounds and put them on display in whatever medium we saw fit. At the end of the two months, we invited our community, friends, and neighborhoods to an art show combining visual art (painting, mixed media, photography, etc.) as well as live performances (music, spoken word, theatrical art, poetry, monologues, even tap dancing). These were our songs, our brush strokes, the scribbles of our pens, our soaring voices, and our quiet whispers. These are our brand new mountain speeches.
