Portraits of Passion
PORTRAITS OF PASSION is an evocative musical journey into the life and times of six historical visionaries. Highly textured compositions weave acoustic and electronic instruments in ways that imaginatively portray each individual's spirit. The music will take you from a medieval monastery, over the Atlantic in a biplane, to an abolitionist rally---and more. Barbara Borden has been drumming since age ten---a passion that has taken her along many musical avenues: performing, recording, collaborating with artists, dancers, authors, storytellers, actors, poets and healers; member of the band Alive! (8 years---four albums); composer (CD's include Beauty in the Beat, All Hearts Beating; with Sheilah Glover---Lady of the Serpent Skirt, Portraits of Passion); solo performer---most recently in her 'percussion play,' She Dares to Drum; drumming peace---1994 performing in refugee camps and peace concerts in the former Yugoslavia, peace actions and demonstrations in the U.S. Ms. Borden is active in the educational and healing aspects of drumming, facilitating drum circles and councils, workshops/clinics, retreats, private and group sessions and mentoring programs. Borden has been awarded numerous educational and artistic grants. She has developed her own healing arts practice for groups and individuals combining the use of drumming, chanting, toning and various percussive sounds. In 2001, Borden was initiated in Zimbawe by African healer, Mandaza. Borden founded HOLI, The Heart of Life Institute---an organization dedicated to encouraging joy, vitality and celebration through drumming and music. HOLI is the home of The Heart Drum Project. A large heart-shaped community drum created by artist B.J. Quintana in conjunction with All OneTribe Drums in Taos, NM, was completed in August, 2000. Since then this transformational instrument, with it's deep sounds and vibrations, has been used by Borden and other Heart Drum Stewards to harmonize, unify and keep the heart of individuals, groups and communities alive and thriving, reminding us that we are all part of the Great Heartbeat of Life. SHEILAH GLOVER is most renowned for her involvement in the award-winning vocal trio Nicholas, Glover and Wray---three distinct voices and personalities that blend into a harmonious and vibrant ensemble. In the twenty-five years together, NGW received many local awards, produced their own albums and toured extensively. Sheilah's other musical interests have taken her into collaborations in theatre, film and performance. She has also scored soundtracks to several award-winning documentary videos and theatre pieces. Glover holds an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Arts from Mills College. She has studied and applied sound therapy and healing to her work as a musician and vocal coach. Sheilah's latest work is a one-woman show focusing the the enneagram system of personality typing called "Is Ennybody Home?
