There's a rich tradition of songwriting in the mid-western heartland of Bloomington, Indiana; home to Hoagy Carmichael and John Mellencamp, and a whole host of others before and since. Bill Headley grew up here playing classical music in piano lessons, singing gospel music in church and listening to country and Pop/Rock on the radio. But when he bought his first acoustic guitar at seventeen, he found that songwriting was his true passion. He gravitated to the sounds coming out of Laurel Canyon in the 70's: Eagles, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg and James Taylor, as well as Joni Mitchell and Carole King. In more recent times, he has been enamored with the more country/folk/blues writing of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen and Steve Earle. The synergy of thought-provoking lyrics combined with a beautiful melody resonates deeply in his being. The craft of writing songs has been a constant throughout Bill's adult life. Since the passing of his father in 2010, this new record has been a year-long quest. ' I wanted to assemble a collection of songs that would represent many elements of the human experience--- love lost and found, death and the passage of time, joy, heartbreak, regret and reconciliation, divine intervention and bad decisions.' 'Angels' contains several musical styles & textures: from gospel-tinged piano ballads, folky acoustic and rocky electric guitars--- to orchestral strings and hillbilly fiddle. Produced by Jake Belser of Farm Fresh Studio here in Bloomington, Bill had an uber-talented team of musicians who helped flesh out the arrangements on each track. Another wonderfully talented Indiana singer/songwrter, Bobbie Lancaster, delivered a memorable vocal on Track #2, 'Heaven on our Side'.
