San Diego's Bigfellas have been described both as 'Zevonesque' and 'Steely Dan for the Pabst Blue Ribbon set'. But Clap!, the only recording from the version 1.0 lineup Bigfellas, is a bit more like 'fat guy glam'. 2008 sees The Bigfellas releasing a higher-budget full scale CD, but 2003's Clap! Shows a glimpse of the other band they might have been. About the songs: 1) CATHY GUERTIN - A get up and dance rocksong, it's got a Guns N' Roses flavor while asking the musical lament 'What was I thinking when I went out with you?' As catchy as a headcold. 2) HEY, DRUNK GIRL - Classic 70's Fender-Rhodes-ish sound. If Curtis Mayfield was white, this would be about the best he could do. Smoky, boozy, it's getting some good airplay on local radio. 3) IN THE DAYTIME - A 'slacker anthem' which has been used in some TV shows and movies. Musically, it's an amalgam of Soul Coughing, Dave Matthews and Sugar Ray. Lyrically, it's for those of us without jobs, or those of us who don't want them. For whatever reason it's our most popular song with the ladies. 4) OWN WAY - Grandiose rock n' roll ... with fiddle! The soaring high notes will haunt you. And there's some choice sound clips from Dragnet's Joe Friday and The Big Lebowski's Jesus. You'll laugh, you'll cry.
