Far Off Things
BEYOND THE BARS are a south Wales based band, whose music has been described as 'folk-rock' and even 'folk with attitude'! Such raw descriptions belie a wide range of influences: the Incredible String Band, Dylan, traditional Celtic music (with regard to musical roots) and many literary roots also. The diversity of tastes, interests and musical backgrounds within the band results in a very mixed and lively set. The wealth of material, with the exception of only one song, is all original. The album 'Far Off Things' 'Far Off Things' was conceived in the summer of 1998. Our previous album, 'Rustic,' had been recorded very rapidly in a local studio, with a reputation for successful recordings of pop bands. The album was near faultless in terms of musical performance, but we felt something was blatantly lacking. A recording should capture the essence of a performance and the character of the performing musicians. Damn the mistakes! Damn the consideration of what constitutes naivety! We decided to record this album ourselves. With the other commitments we all had, we knew this would be a time-consuming process. In fact, it took almost a year from start to finish. That included many Saturday mornings and weekday evenings with the many musicians that make up Beyond the Bars, in the dark room at the rear of Rock Villa. There are mistakes on this album. They have been scrutinized. Of course, we could have re-recorded these parts, but we listened and concluded that it is all right. The spirit of the band is here. Our aim is exploration within the limits of the conventional song. There is no master plan. We hope for little and, therefore, gain much. So be drawn in. You will hear, not the best recorded sound around (but acceptable, nevertheless, we hope), but a bunch of musicians playing with little doctrine but with more than a little inspiration.
