Under the Night
Betty Iron Thumbs "Under the Night" combines honest, autobiographical lyrics with catchy melodic hooks in a musical style reminiscent of Rilo Kiley and early Liz Phair. With the songwriting and vocal duo of Katie Morrison and Michael Long, paired with Jaison Smulski on bass and Ryan Stump on drums, the album examines different tales of heartbreak, victory, love and loss that can occur "Under the Night." Morrison writes and sings songs of her own personal experiences - self-deprecating and hopeful. Long's songwriting explores the darker side of the human personality. From the title track, an electric guitar driven exploration of the night's underbelly, to "You Left Me", a ballad about coping with love lost, to "Have this Dance", a fun, dancey song about lustful jealousy, each track is a slightly different take on the way a night can go. With "Under the Night," Betty Iron Thumbs' sound has evolved since their first EP "Sit and Wait" (2008). "Under the Night" is louder, faster and more bittersweet, but still stays true to the vocal harmonies, catchy songwriting and musicality that have always been Betty Iron Thumbs. An influence of indie-pop, 70's rock 'n' roll and a dash of country can be found on this record. Unique, strong vocals and infectious songwriting stand back to back with dark and unforgiving guitars. Smulski and Stump deliver a punchy, straightforward sound on bass and drums.
