Product notities

Beaucoup Chapeaux plays Euro Americano Roma Jazz. 'Beaucoup Chapeaux has created a very magical niche with this music. It's a feel, an ambiance, something lovers can whisper behind and get up and dance to. It is so much Parisian Bistro or Italian Cafe, part Circus, and is very eccentric.' --Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald. 'You are marvels - you turn any place into one where people want to dance, sing, play, live life to it's fullest." Barbara Price. 'It was wonderful magic yesterday on the air...thx for being willing to do early morning radio...being musicians of late nights and HIGH quality'-Jerianne Van Dijk, KVMR DJ 'You set a mighty nice stage for the evening, as I knew ya would, Maggie. Class, pure class.' Steve Baker, KVMR program manager Fan's reactions: -"Hey thanks for the CD! Played it on TransGlobal Sound System today, and your release party is on the World Music Calendar. It's a great sound...wishing Beaucoup Chapeaux big success!'-Dawn Fischer, KVMR DJ -- Facebook comments: --just turned on KVMR and heard you playing- wow! And you're local! I'll try to make your release party. Beautiful sound. --I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! You guys! Whether listening, dancing, or being blessed to sit in on fiddle, the music and the spirit of generosity and inclusion are transformative! Thank you for creating such a welcoming and joyful environment!-- --This band is scary good -all virtuosos, all acoustic, they drive the teeming bistro bonhomie in a petite cafe and wherever they go. Instrumentation: Maggie McKaig -accordion, guitar, voice Luke Wilson - tenor guitar, dobro, banjo, voice Murray Campbell - violin, oboe, English horn, voice Randy McKean - clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, voice Welcome to the world of Beaucoup Chapeaux. Based out of Nevada City, CA, our music is apparently transporting. Our fans tell us we can get them to Europe in mere seconds--which is good, as that is our intention, with a considerable amount of beauty, life, gusto, heart, and as much wildness as we can possibly summon. We play original compositions along with various types of European based music such as French musettes, Italian mazurkas, tangos, Roma waltzes, Greek hasapikos, as well as the occasional foray into Celtic tunes. Just about anything that takes our interest. You will find there are classical, and American folk and jazz influences throughout our music. Hence, our name, which means, roughly, and yes, grammatically incorrect (our apologies), 'many hats'. We just love the way the name rolls off our tongues. Although Beaucoup Chapeaux formed on Valentine's Day 2009. Individually we all have played in many various groups, in numerous places around the world. We conjure up our musical ideas on piano accordion, violin, oboe, tenor guitar, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, banjo, dobro, and voice. Our original compositions are inspired by all of our varied influences, with a predominant Roma feel. In January 2011 we received the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce 'Best Live Music 2010' award. Nevada City is a town known for it's excellent and abundant musical community, with an extraordinary number of world class musicians for the size of it's population. As such, this award was a great honor for us. Utah Phillips was a good friend of ours, and had this to say about Beaucoup Chapeaux founder McKaig and her long time partner Luke Wilson: 'Maggie McKaig and Luke Wilson are two of the finest musicians, singers, and songwriters performing today.' McKaig and Wilson were 2010 featured artists for the reknowned Nevada County Composers Cooperative, and along with Campbell, premier showcase artists at the 2009 FARWest Folk Alliance Conference. McKaig's song, 'War is a Business' was featured on a November 2010 edition of 'Democracy Now'. Her instrumental, 'Flora's Waltz', placed 6th out of 5000 entries for Best Celtic Instrumental in the Just Plain Folks 2009 Music Awards in Nashville, TN. Maggie Rudy McKaig has performed/recorded with many fine musicians including two time Grammy winner Mary Youngblood, Alasdair Fraser, Utah Phillips, Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald, George Brooks, Ron Casat, Bill Eaglesham, Peter Wilson, Sands Hall, Ivan Najera, Bill Douglass, and Dan Scanlan. She gained her reputed wildness growing up half feral in California's Santa Cruz Mountains, and the central coast. Her curiosity and travels led her through rock, folk, blues, classical, country, bluegrass, newgrass, Canadiana, Americana, Jazz, Celtic, and Gypsy, while performing on street corners, ships, beaches, mountain tops, cafés, barns, bars, museums, cemeteries, peace marches, benefits of all kinds, and on many festival stages. Canadian born Luke P. Wilson spent the early 1970's in England and Europe, and recorded an album with partner Jesse P. Morin for Capitol Records called 'Peaceful Company'. From 1974- 1985 he performed with many top Canadian folk musicians such as Valdy, Diamond Joe White, Ian Tyson, Ken Hamm, members of Prairie Oyster, Ron Casat, and Bill Eaglesham. He was one of Calgary's top session players from 1976-1985, recording numerous commercials and various albums. In California, Luke has performed with a wide variety of musicians, including Utah Phillips, Alasdair Fraser, Saul Rayo, Sands Hall, Dan Scanlan, and Kimberly Bass. Luke also works as a record producer, and is a master luthier at his shop, Wolfnote Studio. From Scotland, Murray Campbell moved to Nevada County early in 2005. His brilliant playing of violin, oboe, and English horn, combined with a keen intellect and sense of humor, have brightened the work of Paul Kamm and Eleanor MacDonald, Alasdair Fraser, Kipchoge Spencer, Issac James, Vermillion Lies, the Belfry Brothers, ChickenBonz, Han Park, and Bristle. Campbell was both traditionally and classically trained as a musician in Scotland, and studied in the Hague for a number of years. He has performed with the Auburn Symphony Orchestra, the Sacramento Camellia Symphony Orchestra, and the North State Symphony Orchestra. Iowa born saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Iowan Randy McKean has performed with rockers Poi Dog Pondering, David Rice and Teratoma, took part in the premiere performance of MacArthur Genius award recipient Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Orchestra at the Kitchen in New York City, and toured Taiwan as part of James Fei's alto saxophone quartet. Recent activities include the Nevada County Composers Cooperative and the performance collective Gardyloo; noise improv trio Me & Alex Ross, with guitarist Ross Hammond and percussionist Alex Jenkins; avant-folk duo GraVIE, with violinist Murray Campbell; the chamber jazz duo Off Center, with guitarist David Dvorin, and leads the new music ensemble 'Bristle'. His CD's include So Dig This Big Crux (Rastascan) and, with the Great Circle Saxophone Quartet, Child King Dictator Fool (New World). He received a B.A. in Jazz Studies from Coe College, where he studied with Paul Smoker, and an M.A. in Music Composition from Mills College, studying with Anthony Braxton, David Rosenboom, and Maggi Payne. The café was hoping to create a little more European atmosphere in a gold rush town. Maggie agreed, but said she would like to bring a few friends to play with her. And so, she was joined by Luke and Murray. A couple of weeks later Randy came through the door with his clarinets to sit in, and stayed. As it happened, people loved it--really really love it---and the band became a regular and popular attraction on Friday nights. Little did we know that we would still be playing there two years later, or how successful the combination of our instruments, music, and personalities would be with the community. It is a little scary to have such a regular gig, but we keep inventing new music to play. The Café is virtually overflowing every Friday night. The fact that we play acoustically, with no amplification, has attracted a wide variety of patrons of every age, who obviously enjoy a chance to get up close and personal with "real" music. None of us have ever had such a regular gig. But now, if we are in town, we are there on Friday nights. It's just like Brigadoon--only we appear once a week instead of once a year.
