Andy Bliss, Steve Lundin, John Pobojewski, and Pat Schleker formed the Base4 Percussion Quartet as a chamber group that performs demanding, high-quality literature for Western and non-Western percussion. They entertain their audiences with energetic works accompanied by visual interactive multimedia. Base4 melds classical precision, contemporary improvisation, and chamber ensemble interpretation to create their unique sonic persona. This distinctive character stems from the members' experiences in African, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean, and north Indian musical traditions -- all influences that shine through in the group's interpretations of repertoire standards, original compositions and arrangements. Members of Base4 have performed in venues across the United States including Carnegie Hall in New York City, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, as well as international venues in Seoul, South Korea, and Port of Spain, Trinidad. The quartet also won the opportunity to perform a showcase concert at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in November of 2003. 'You have worked out a quite specific sound culture that offers a parallel to the interpretation of the legendary Modern Jazz Quartet. Your interpretations are fluid, transparent, and of a downright dance-like lightness. I heard a concert that fascinated through it's rhythmic precision [and] tonal accuracy, combined with a restraint in the matter of dynamics, but you also had the necessary courage to bring out the tonal characteristics of the instruments. All of you understood, lived, and played the soul of music.' -Siegfried Fink, world-renowned percussionist, composer, and educator 'The Base4 Quartet gave an outstanding concert at PASIC 2003. Their musicianship and professionalism was crystal clear throughout their presentation. Bravo!' -Mark Ford, marimba recording artist '[Base4] presented an impressive program of new and standard repertoire. They played with energy and commitment. I suspect we will be hearing a lot from these players.' -JB Smith, composer and contemporary percussion recording artist.
