Ten Dollars An Hour
Bangups 10 Dollars an Hour It's Elvis meets Jesus and Mary Chain. Velvet Underground fused with the Kinks. Johnny Cash ...backed up by the Toadies. Or...something like that. Actually - it's the Bangups - and their latest release "10 Dollars an Hour" is as ferociously fast and satisfying as an afternoon quickie on your lunch break. Yes. That good. The tracks on this Grand Rapids duo's debut fly by, unhinged, honest, raw - and they call to mind everything you love about whiskey soaked, back-sliding blues - then seal it off with vocals that sound like a lapsed preacher with a hangover from hell. But in a good way. As catchy as the Beach Boys and as noisy as the White Stripes - The Bangups spin tales of naughty shenanigans at bible camp, sunburned summer love affairs with wickedly dangerous girls - and the uncertain future. The best part - it's all ridden with foot stomping, cymbal crashing beats and glorious guitar fuzz. No contrived "bad ass" vibe. No whiney, self-loathing lyrics with flat ironed hair to match. Just straight up, dirty, music. A band that lives up to their name - and the music to back it all up. If you like any of the bands referenced - you'll dig the Bangups. It's that simple. See for yourself. - Dan MacDonald, 939 The River.
